Superlatives

Use the superlative to show that something has the highest quality of some trait within a group of subjects.


One Syllable -est

  1. small – smallest - This is my smallest pan.
  2. cold – coldest - Winter is the coldest time of the year.
  3. young – youngest - This is my youngest sister.


One Syllable ends in /e/ -st

  1. safe – safest - This is not the safest place to live.
  2. nice – nicest - He is the nicest person in the office.
  3. close – closest - This is the closest shop to my house.


Consonant + vowel + Consonant -(x)est

  1. hot – hottest - Florida is the hottest state in America.
  2. big – biggest - Tokyo is the biggest city in Japan.
  3. wet– wettest - April is the wettest month of the year.


Two Syllable ends in /y/ -iest

  1. happy – happiest - I am happiest when I am at home.
  2. angry – angriest - He is the angriest man I know.
  3. pretty – prettiest - This is the prettiest part of town.


Two or More Syllables most --

  1. dangerous – most dangerous
  2. This is the most dangerous part of town.
  3. expensive – most expensive
  4. This is the most expensive restaurant in my city.
  5. difficult – most difficult
  6. This is the most difficult part of the test.


Irregular

  1. good – best - Do your best!
  2. bad – worst - This was my worst performance.
