Comparatives


Use the comparative to show that something has a greater quality of some trait compared to another subject.


One Syllable / -er

  1. small – smaller - This book is smaller than that book.
  2. cold – colder - Alaska is colder than Hawaii.
  3. young – younger - You are younger than your parents.


One Syllable ends in /e/ -r

  1. safe – safer - Japan is safer than most countries.
  2. nice – nicer - The weather is nicer in summer.
  3. close – closer - His house is closer to the airport than mine.


Consonant + vowel + Consonant -(x)er

  1. hot – hotter - It is usually hotter at noon than midnight.
  2. big – bigger - My town is bigger than before.
  3. fat – fatter - I am always a little fatter after the holidays.


Two Syllable ends in /y/ -ier

  1. happy – happier - I am happier now than before.
  2. angry – angrier - The boss is angrier in the morning.
  3. pretty – prettier - That shirt looked prettier on you.


Two or More Syllables >> more -

  1. dangerous – more dangerous
  2. The city is more dangerous now.
  3. expensive – more expensive
  4. Everything is more expensive these days.
  5. difficult – more difficult
  6. This test is more difficult than the last one.


Irregular

  1. good – better - Life was better before.
  2. bad – worse - I am still sick. I feel worse than yesterday.
