First Conditional

The First Conditional


The first conditional shows a cause and effect relationship.


For example:


If it rains, we will cancel the game.

If I have any problems, I will let you know.


The , if clause, can go before or after the main clause.


If I have time, I might go hiking.

She can join us if she wants.


The main clause uses modals such as “will,” “can,”  "might," and ,“should.”


If we leave now, we should have enough time.

I will call you if I have any problems.

We might change plans if something comes up.


The “if clause” uses the present simple. 


If he leaves, I will tell you.

If it snows, we can  go skiing!


The words, "unless," and, "as long as," can also make, "if-statements."


I cannot go unless I finish my work.

We can play tennis as long as it doesn't rain.
